A revert brother discusses the often-overlooked topic of modest fashion for Muslim men.
When people talk about modest fashion in Islam, the conversation usually centers on women. Hijab styles, abaya cuts, how to look professional in modest clothing.
But brothers have obligations too. And honestly, we don't talk about it enough.
Allah says in the Quran:
"Tell the believing men to reduce some of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do." — Quran 24:30
Notice that the command to men comes before the command to women in the same surah. We have responsibilities too.
I became Muslim three years ago. Before that, I dressed like most German guys in their thirties - jeans, t-shirts, nothing special. After my shahada, I had to rethink everything.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"The part of the lower garment which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire." — Sahih al-Bukhari 5787
Here's what I learned: modest doesn't mean unfashionable. And Islamic doesn't mean you have to look like you're from a different century.
A well-fitted thobe is elegant. A quality kufi adds character. Even in Western clothes, you can dress modestly - looser fits, longer shirts, pants that actually cover your ankles.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught:
"No one who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise." A man said, "But a man likes his clothes to look good and his shoes to look good." He said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people." — Sahih Muslim 91
What I struggle with is the gym. How do you work out modestly when everyone around you is in tight shorts and tank tops? I've found longer shorts and loose shirts work fine. I look different, sure. But I've stopped caring.
Ready to upgrade your modest wardrobe? Our men's collection features quality thobes, kufis, and everyday wear designed for the modern Muslim man.
The point is: brothers, take this seriously. How we present ourselves matters. It's part of our deen. You don't have to look like everyone else. You can look distinctly Muslim and still look good.
Actually, in my experience, you look better.
If you're ready to explore modest options for men, take a look at what we carry. Thobes, kufis, and pieces that let you dress with intention.
