A revert sister shares her journey from style confusion to confidence after starting to wear hijab.
When I started wearing hijab two years ago, I felt like I lost myself a little bit.
That sounds dramatic, I know. But fashion had always been my thing. I loved expressing myself through clothes. And suddenly I was standing in front of my closet with no idea how any of this worked.
Allah says in the Quran:
"O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves part of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused." — Quran 33:59
I understood the command. I believed in it. But I struggled with the execution.
The early months were rough. I bought hijabs that didn't suit my face shape. Wore combinations that looked great on Instagram but terrible on me. Spent way too much money on pieces I never wore again.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Modesty is part of faith." — Sahih al-Bukhari 9, Sahih Muslim 35
What changed everything was letting go of the idea that there's one "right" way to wear hijab.
Some sisters layer multiple pieces. Some go minimal. Some wear bright colors. Some stick to neutrals. There's no uniform. There's just you, figuring out what makes you feel both modest and beautiful.
Allah also tells us:
"And tell the believing women to reduce some of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which necessarily appears thereof and to wrap their headcovers over their chests." — Quran 24:31
For me, that turned out to be simple wraps in solid colors. Soft fabrics that drape nicely. Pieces that don't require fifteen pins and a tutorial video.
