Practical ways to maximize the blessed first ten days of Dhul Hijjah from home.
Every year during Dhul Hijjah, I feel a strange mix of gratitude and longing.
Gratitude because these first ten days are so blessed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." They said, "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?" He said, "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his life and his wealth and does not return with either." — Sahih al-Bukhari 969
Longing because I watch the Hajj broadcasts and wish I was there. Standing at Arafat. Walking around the Kaaba. Being part of something so much bigger than myself.
Allah says about these days:
"By the dawn. And by ten nights." — Quran 89:1-2
Many scholars say these "ten nights" refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah - that's how significant they are that Allah swears by them.
I haven't made Hajj yet. Insha'Allah one day. But until then, I've learned to make these days meaningful from wherever I am.
Here's what I try to do:
Fast the first nine days if I can. If that's too much, at least fast on the Day of Arafat. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Fasting on the Day of Arafat expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year." — Sahih Muslim 1162
Increase my dhikr. Takbeer, tahmeed, tahleel. Out loud when possible. In the car, walking to work, doing dishes.
Give extra charity. Even small amounts. The reward is multiplied.
Prepare for Eid al-Adha. Our collection of elegant thobes and modest wear will have you ready for the blessed celebration.
Read about the rituals of Hajj. Learn what the pilgrims are doing. Make dua for them. This keeps me connected even from far away.
And on Eid al-Adha, I make it special. New clothes, good food, family time. Celebrating even when I'm not at the main event.
Dhul Hijjah is a gift for all of us. Not just those who can afford the journey.
However you spend these blessed days, make sure you're comfortable doing it. We've got modest wear that works for worship and everyday life at the shop.
